What is stress? The negative effects of stress occur when the pressures of life are so constant, or so great, that your body has inadequate time to recover.
Stress in itself is not a problem to our health, but it is prolonged stress without the possibility of recovery that have proven to be very harmful.
When stressed, the body thinks it is under attack and switches to ‘fight or flight’ mode, releasing a complex mix of hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine to prepare the body for physical action. If this comes from a positive influence, it can motivate you into action and increase productivity levels. However, if it is processed as a negative influence, it can have the opposite effect on you, leading to physical symptoms.
Prolonged stress undoubtedly makes people ill. It’s now known to contribute to heart disease, hypertension and high blood pressure, it affects the immune system, is linked to strokes, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), ulcers, diabetes, migraine, muscle and joint pain, insomnia, allergies and hair loss. It also affects your cognitive state: memory loss, lack of concentration, “brain fog”, indecision and self doubt. As well as your emotional state: anxiety, frustration, irritability, depression, and feeling overwhelmed.
